Cádiz celebrates los Juanillos with a contest and festive burning

The Ayuntamiento de Cádiz has organized a festive day to celebrate the traditional festivity of los Juanillos this Monday, June 23. The event, which combines creativity and tradition, will include the Municipal Competition and the burning of a juanillo in the emblematic Plaza de San Antonio.

The competition will feature four works, two located in extramuros and two in the casco histórico, plus the municipal juanillo, which will not take part in the contest. A specialized jury, made up of the Deputy Mayor for Fiestas y Carnaval, representatives of the Asociación de Artesanos, a recycling expert from the company Valoriza, and a member of the Delegación de Fiestas y Carnaval, will award three prizes. The awards consist of 1,000 euros for first place, 500 euros for second place, and 300 euros for third place.

The burnings of the juanillos will begin at 19:00 in the square next to the Asociación de Vecinos Campo de la Aviación de Loreto, on calle Juan de la Cosa. There, the work titled ‘Tira al juanillo por el patinillo’ will be burned. At 19:45, it will be the turn of the Asociación de Vecinos Tacita de Plata, which will present its proposal ‘Me los quitan volando’ in the courtyard on calle Bulería.

The event will continue in the casco histórico, where at 20:30 the juanillo from the Asociación de Vecinos Gades La Viña, titled ‘Trump y sus huevos’, will burn in Plaza Manolo Santander. At 21:15, the Asociación de Vecinos Murallas de San Carlos will present its work ‘Pan y circo’ in Plaza de España, next to La Negrita.

The day will culminate at 22:00 with the burning of the municipal juanillo, ‘El circo de los políticos’, created by the Cádiz company Quattro’s Producción Artística. This monumental piece, designed in a 360º format, can be enjoyed from any point in Plaza de San Antonio, thanks to its decorative elements and imposing presence.

To accompany the burnings, both in extramuros and in the casco histórico, the musical groups Jambá Band Brass and León Dixie Jazz Band will perform live, bringing a festive and lively atmosphere to this unique celebration in Cádiz.
