Puente Carranza undergoes renewal: emergency works to ensure safety
After years of deterioration caused by waves, the central Government has declared emergency works on span 30 of Puente Carranza. The objective: to ensure short-term safety in a vital infrastructure for the city of Cádiz.
Temporary closure and accelerated pace
The works, which began at the end of December, are progressing as planned by the Ministerio de Transportes, Movilidad y Agenda Urbana. Puente Carranza closed to traffic on March 17 and is expected to reopen on July 16, meeting the four-month deadline initially announced.
A team of 30 people works around the clock
To meet this goal, a team of 30 workers is working in three shifts, subject to working conditions. Antonio Romero, site management engineer, highlights the team's commitment to ensuring the bridge's safety.
Crucial phase: demolition and new beams
Currently, the removal of affected utilities is being finalized, and demolition of the thin layer across the 44-meter section of the bridge where the work is concentrated has begun.
The six affected beams will be removed and demolished on an open area near Club Náutico Elcano. In parallel, the new beams, manufactured by a specialized company, will be transported from Utrera.
A milestone in the project: the gap in span 30
The removal of the beams will leave a gap in the affected section, a striking sight that the Demarcación de Carreteras hopes will last as short a time as possible.
Restoration of systems and guaranteed safety
After installing the new beams, the containment systems, lighting, signage, and barriers will be restored, along with the road surface.
Marcos Martín, head of the Demarcación de Carreteras, emphasizes the importance of these works on an infrastructure with a 60-year history, exposed to the area's harsh weather conditions.
Investment in safety and future
The study carried out by the Ministry's Inspection across the entire infrastructure guarantees the safety of the rest of Puente Carranza. The three million euro investment in these emergency works demonstrates the Government's commitment to the safety and future of this vital infrastructure for Cádiz.
