Festival Jazz Cádiz 2024

Festival Jazz Cádiz will celebrate its seventeenth edition from July 18 to 28. Ayuntamiento de Cádiz, which will once again collaborate with this cultural event, hosted on Tuesday the presentation of the poster, attended by the Deputy Mayor for Culture, Maite Gonzalez, provincial deputy José Manuel Cossi, Festival director Marina Fernández, president of the Asociación Festival Jazz Cádiz, Pepe Dorado, poster illustrator Paz Ramos, as well as Silvia Jareño and Pablo Cappa, heads of the 'Chictuchic' school.

This edition's lineup, which will feature concerts, lectures, and workshops across various venues in the city, includes major premieres and key names such as Cyrille Aimée, as well as innovative fusions like SUMRRÁ with El Niño de Elche, or Chipi & Chano, featuring pianist Chano Domínguez and comedian, singer, and songwriter Chipi from La Canalla.

Cádiz's Councillor for Culture, Maite González, highlighted the importance of an event "that will star in the city's cultural summer," underlining the increase in municipal funding for the event. "For us, culture is a priority and we will continue to support initiatives like this," noted González.

For his part, José Manuel Cossi, representing the Diputación Provincial, which will also collaborate with Jazz Cádiz, assured that "the commitment of the Diputación de Cádiz to jazz, music, and culture is stronger than ever," while highlighting the city's alliance with the cultural industry.

Marina Fernández, director of Festival Jazz Cádiz, unveiled the lineup for a festival presenting "several premieres by artists who rarely perform here," as well as "explosive proposals and fusions." In addition, she revealed the new image of the festival, captured in a poster created by artist Paz Ramos.

Presentation Concert

As in previous editions, the main concert program will take place on the stage of El Baluarte de la Candelaria; however, activities begin a week earlier, on Thursday, July 18 at the Centro Cultural Fundación Unicaja de Cádiz with the presentation of the debut album by the young Carlos Villoslada «Caba» Double Guitar Quartet, who is currently beginning his professional career with this original quartet proposal featuring two guitars, double bass, and drums. "Jazz Cádiz is always committed to supporting emerging young local artists," assured the director.

Concert Program

At Parador de Turismo de Cádiz

With one of the most spectacular sunsets of the Cádiz summer as a backdrop, on the terrace of the Parador Atlántico de Cádiz, the musical event will kick off with the concert on Tuesday, July 23 at 21:30h, outdoors and with free admission, starring two of Europe's most innovative current saxophonists: Kika Sprangers and Irene Reig (Alto For Two) with a repertoire of their own compositions.

At Baluarte de la Candelaria

The main lineup of the programme will kick off at Baluarte de la Candelaria. The schedule starts on Wednesday 24 July at 21:00h with a Night dedicated exclusively to Swing, both for listening and dancing, featuring performances by two spectacular bands from the national swing scene: the Swing O’Day quartet and Jove Big Band de Sedajazz. (One of the most prominent youth talent big bands at the national level)

It will continue on Thursday 25 July at 22:00h with an evening starring Chipi & Chano, the duo formed by the great pianist Chano Domínguez and comedian and songwriter Antonio Romera, El Chipi. An alliance between the elegant side of Chano Domínguez and the rogue side of Antonio Romera “Chipi La Canalla”.

The weekend will then begin on Friday 26 July at 22:00h with the festival's most avant-garde jazz night: the internationally renowned Galician trio SUMRRÁ presents a new project alongside multidisciplinary singer Niño de Elche. “Two creative forces representing the country's musical avant-garde joining together to offer us an unprecedented project,” says Marina Fernández.

Cyrille Aimée will be the star on Saturday 27 July at 22:00h. This French-Dominican singer is one of the most virtuous European voices on today's scene. Her latest work, released in the spring of 2024, is an absolute gem that delivers equal parts elegance, freshness, passion, and technique.

The last concert at Baluarte de la Candelaria will be on Sunday 28 July at 22:00h with the performance of FOCUS, a symphonic piece by Eddie Sauter considered a masterpiece of orchestral jazz music, performed on this occasion by Pedro Cortejosa in a jazz quartet alongside the string ensemble La Bramantina.

V Forum JazzCádiz (19-28 July)

Starting Friday 19 July, the V Forum Jazz Cádiz activities kick off. It begins with a lecture titled “Cuando el Jazz es una canción”, an event with two very special people for this festival: Javier Estrella (Fest. Jazz Madrid, Fest. Música Aranjuez, JazzEñe de SGAE, President of PJE) and his daughter Irene Estrella (Comparative Literature Specialist, Director of the music festival Mujeres, Patrimonio de Sigüenza), who will talk about jazz singers and discuss their songs, history, and stories told through the lyrics.

On Monday 22 July, there will be a talk titled “Los archivos de Patalo” at Bar La Parra de Veedor, with Juan de Dios García. This activity ties in with the tribute paid to him by the festival in 2023. Patalo left behind an impressive collection of press clippings that perfectly describe the development of jazz in Cádiz and Spain in general. Juan de Dios García has organized this memorable collection and will discuss it at Jazz Cádiz.

On Tuesday 23 July, there is a double feature focusing on the section dedicated each year to the environment, dubbed a few years ago as VERDEA JAZZ CÁDIZ. At 11:00h, the conference “Sostenibilidad en la Música en Vivo. Better Live” by Marina Fdez. (Jazz Cádiz, Plataforma Jazz España) and Loli Coello (Vicerrectorado de Sostenibilidad y Cultura de la UCA). Following that, at 12:00h, a Master-Class with the Alto For Two quintet. Both activities are held within the framework of the European live music sustainability project ‘Better Live’ and in collaboration with UCA Universidad de Cádiz.

Wednesday 23rd will be for the little ones, with an Educational Concert by Jove Big Band de Sedajazz, which will take place at Aulario de La bomba at 18:30. On Thursday, July 25th at 12:00, singer-songwriter and lyricist Antonio Romera, Chipi, from La Canalla, will arrive to host a workshop on “How to write a song”.

The V Forum Jazz Cádiz will round off the weekend with two activities: on one hand, the Swing and Lindy Hop Workshops, which are a great success every year and focus on introducing this style from scratch to the curious and lovers of jazz and dance. They will take place on Saturday and Sunday at 12:00 at Baluarte de Candelaria. Finally, the festival will offer the public the chance to attend the open rehearsal of FOCUS, a work premiering on Sunday night that offers music lovers a very interesting proposal on the arrangement and reinterpretation of a jazz masterpiece.
