Urban Bus Strike: Work stoppages starting June 27

Tranvía de Cádiz workers on strike starting June 27

The staff of Tranvía de Cádiz a San Fernando y Carraca S.A. has announced an indefinite strike starting July 10, following the company's refusal to negotiate their collective agreement. The decision, unanimously adopted in assemblies held on Monday, comes after two unsuccessful meetings with the company on March 14 and May 14.

According to Manuel Prado, president of the works council, the company rejects the agreement platform presented by the workers on January 17. The strike will affect inspectors, workshop employees, office staff, and drivers, who are demanding significant wage and labor improvements.

Demands of the staff:

  • Leave: Adjust leave periods to the Estatuto de los Trabajadores.
  • Bonuses: Improve wage bonuses, bringing them into line with other provincial agreements.
  • Rest periods: Guarantee 15-minute rest breaks on urban lines in San Fernando and half of the Cádiz-San Fernando service. It is reported that on the urban lines in Cádiz (1, 2, 3, 5, and 7) these breaks are not fully observed due to pre- and post-service tasks.
  • Time tracking: Implement a digital clock-in system for the workday to compensate for work performed outside established hours.
  • Festive events: Demand compensation for the increased workload during special festive events in the city.

Prado highlights the significant increase in passenger numbers, going from 11,537,000 in 2019 to 12,400,000 in 2024, which implies a heavier workload without corresponding compensation. "There is more and more workload in exchange for nothing," he states.

Strike schedule:

  • Full stoppages: June 27 and 28, and July 3, 4, and 5 (from 5:15 to 1:50 hours).
  • Indefinite strike: Starting July 10.

This situation creates uncertainty in the public transport service of the Bahía de Cádiz.
