Cádiz public lighting improvement: Priority investment requested

Adelante Izquierda Gaditana submits proposal to improve public lighting in Cádiz

The municipal group Adelante Izquierda Gaditana has announced its intention to present a motion in the upcoming Pleno ordinario del Ayuntamiento de Cádiz with the goal of implementing a comprehensive plan for the maintenance and improvement of public lighting throughout the city. This plan includes conducting an updated diagnosis of the condition of the facilities across all neighborhoods, in order to address existing deficiencies.

Commitment to priority investment in public lighting

The initiative proposes that the annual investment allocated to regular public lighting and its maintenance should be, at a minimum, higher than the funds earmarked for extraordinary lighting. This criterion aims to guarantee that public resources focus primarily on essential services throughout the year, strengthening safety and quality of life in Cádiz's neighborhoods.

Importance of lighting for public safety

The spokesperson for Adelante, David de la Cruz, highlighted that public lighting is an essential service for the population, not only for visibility, but also for its impact on key aspects such as safety, mobility, accessibility and civic coexistence. However, in recent years, various deficiencies have been detected in the city's lighting system, including frequent blackouts, unlit streetlights, obsolete light fixtures, and insufficient illumination in streets, squares, and walkways.

Deficiencies that especially affect working-class neighborhoods

De la Cruz points out that these shortcomings particularly impact working-class neighborhoods, affecting the safety and comfort of their residents. Therefore, he advocates for a sustained and planned investment to modernize facilities, improve energy efficiency, ensure proper maintenance, and guarantee an equitable distribution of lighting throughout the city.

Criticism of spending on extraordinary lighting

Additionally, the party criticizes the Ayuntamiento for continuing to allocate significant public resources to extraordinary Christmas lighting—an investment that, in their view, is excessive compared to the maintenance of regular public lighting infrastructure, which currently suffers from a deficient management model. Adelante will request at the January 29 session that the government team re-evaluate and prioritize the budget toward permanent improvements in public lighting, moving away from one-off expenses that fail to address the system's structural problems.
