Discover Andalusian Heritage: Cultural Activities for the Whole Family
This April, the museums and cultural ensembles of Andalusia are opening their doors to families and history lovers with special programming. With the aim of highlighting the importance of the conservation of Andalusia's rich heritage, various activities including guided tours and workshops have been organized. These initiatives coincide with the commemoration of the International Day for Monuments and Sites, celebrated on April 18, and seek to bring collections and history closer to all audiences.
Cádiz: Archaeology and Art in the Spotlight
In the province of Cádiz, the Conjunto Arqueológico de Baelo Claudia and the Museo Provincial de Cádiz will host two unique events. On Saturday, April 18, little ones can enjoy an exciting escape room game titled ‘Tempus redax rerum’, an archaeological adventure designed for the whole family. At the same time, the Museo de Cádiz will offer a guided tour of the acclaimed exhibition ‘Reflejos. Picasso x Barceló’, exploring the fascinating dialogue between the ceramics of these two geniuses and the museum's archaeological collection.
World Art Day and Cultural Innovation
This year, the celebration expands to also commemorate World Art Day, established by Unesco in 2019 and honoring the birth of Leonardo da Vinci every April 15. Various Andalusian museums and the Instituto Andaluz de Patrimonio Histórico (IAPH) join together to highlight the essential role of art in society, promoting innovation, creativity, and cultural diversity.
Living Heritage and Emergency Response: A Call to Action
Under the motto ‘Patrimonio vivo y respuesta de emergencia’, the International Day for Monuments and Sites focuses on protecting the cultural legacy we inherit and pass on. It aims to give visibility to the conservation and safeguarding work of "living heritage", which spans from the tangible to the intangible. In addition, it emphasizes the crucial response of public administrations in emergency situations, natural disasters, and conflicts.
Antequera: Drill and Safeguarding of Heritage
The Conjunto Arqueológico Dólmenes de Antequera, which last year was a pioneer in Spain with an earthquake evacuation drill, kicks off the programming. On April 15, a practical tour titled ‘Aprendemos ante una situación de emergencia’ will take place in collaboration with the Unidad Militar de Emergencia (UME) and Protección Civil, to learn about heritage safeguarding mechanisms.
Almería: Journey to the Origin of the Alphabet and Protection of Legacy
The province of Almería joins in with educational activities. On April 16, the Enclave Arqueológico de Villaricos will offer the tour-workshop ‘El origen de nuestro alfabeto’, where young people will discover and recreate Phoenician letters. The following day, the Museo de Almería will present the workshop ‘Un patrimonio que salvar. Patrimonio vivo y respuesta de emergencia’ for adult audiences. The celebrations will culminate on April 18 with a guided tour of the Conjunto Monumental de la Alcazaba de Almería, focusing on its restored buildings, with explanations by architect Gerardo Úbeda.
