The Torreón de las Puertas de Tierra reopens in Cádiz
Opening of the Torreón de las Puertas de Tierra in Cádiz
The mayor of Cádiz, Bruno García, has confirmed that on December 11 the Torreón de las Puertas de Tierra and its upper walkway will reopen to the public, after several years of closure. This reopening is the result of various refurbishment works carried out by the delegations of Mantenimiento Urbano and Cultura.
García stressed that, “just as was done with the castillo de San Sebastián, our goal is to continue recovering public spaces for the citizens, in this case, in a municipal facility.” He also recalled that the previous municipal government had already planned an interpretation centre for the city's fortifications, which will allow visitors to enjoy an immersive virtual reality experience about the Puertas de Tierra and the glacis of Cádiz's land front.
The current municipal government has decided to go further and open the upper walkway of the Puertas de Tierra to the public. To this end, the municipal delegations of Cultura and Mantenimiento Urbano have carried out various improvements, including:
- Replacement of signage.
- Maintenance work, such as improvements to the restrooms.
- Clearing vegetation from the entire roof.
- Restoration of the powder magazine structures and cannons.
- Increased security.
- Repair of lighting, benches, and skylights.
- Installation of new elements, such as litter bins.
The mayor emphasized that “this commitment to our heritage will continue, as the restoration of the entire front of the Puertas de Tierra is one of the three projects included in the 27 million euro loan that the Ayuntamiento de Cádiz has requested to undertake major city projects.”
